About this excursion
Designed specifically for guests staying at hotels in Cairo. The tour includes the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx.
Built near the Giza Pyramids, this purpose-designed museum now holds the complete Tutankhamun collection together for the first time, displayed with modern conservation and lighting standards. Its scale is immense, with grand staircases, a massive statue of Ramesses II in the atrium, and galleries organized to walk visitors chronologically through Egyptian history. Many visitors pair a GEM morning with a Giza Pyramids afternoon, since the museum sits just minutes from the plateau.
The three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure have stood on the Giza plateau for roughly 4,500 years and remain the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World still largely intact. Visitors can enter the interior chambers of some pyramids for an extra fee, ride camels or horses along the plateau for classic photo angles, and take in the surprisingly close view of modern Cairo sprawling right up to the desert's edge.
Carved from a single limestone outcrop, the Sphinx combines a lion's body with a human head believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre, and has stood guard near the pyramids for millennia despite erosion, quarrying damage, and the loss of its nose. The nearby Valley Temple and the classic viewing platform in front of the Sphinx's paws are the go-to spots for the postcard shot with the pyramids rising behind it.
