1. Excursion Details & Availability
About this excursion
Designed specifically for guests staying at hotels in Cairo and travelling to Alexandria for the excursion; it is not an Alexandria hotel-stay excursion. The tour includes the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, Qaitbay Citadel, Bibliotheca Alexandrina and Alexandria mosques.
Cut deep into the rock across several underground levels, these Roman-era catacombs blend Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artistic styles in a single burial complex — sphinxes and pharaonic gods carved in distinctly Greco-Roman poses. The lowest level is partially flooded and inaccessible, but the upper chambers, with their carved niches and central pillar tomb, are open to explore.
Built in the 15th century on the Mediterranean shore, this fortress occupies the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — and even incorporates some of the lighthouse's original stone blocks in its walls. Its seafront setting makes for dramatic photos, especially with waves breaking against the surrounding rocks.
This striking, discus-shaped modern building was constructed to commemorate the legendary ancient Library of Alexandria and now functions as a major library, museum, and cultural complex, complete with a planetarium and rotating exhibitions. Its sweeping glass-and-granite exterior facing the Mediterranean is as much a reason to visit as what's inside.
A tour through Alexandria's most notable mosques, including the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque with its distinctive Andalusian-Islamic architecture, offers a look at the city's layered religious and cultural history along the Mediterranean coast. The mosque's location near the old fishing harbor also makes for an easy pairing with a stroll along the Corniche.
