About this excursion
Designed specifically for guests staying at hotels in Luxor. This West Bank tour includes Colossi of Memnon, Hatshepsut Temple and Valley of the Kings.
Hidden in the dry hills of the West Bank, this royal necropolis holds over 60 known tombs cut into rock for New Kingdom pharaohs and nobles, most famously Tutankhamun. Standard tickets include entry to three tombs of the visitor's choosing (Tutankhamun's tomb and a few others require a separate fee), each decorated with vividly preserved wall paintings depicting the pharaoh's journey through the underworld. Because there's little natural shade and no photography permitted inside most tombs, a hat, water, and an early start make a real difference to the visit.
Built into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari for one of Egypt's few female pharaohs, this mortuary temple is instantly recognizable for its three tiered terraces and colonnades that seem to grow directly out of the surrounding rock. Reliefs inside record Hatshepsut's expedition to the Land of Punt and her divine birth story, part of a broader campaign to legitimize her rule. The temple's clean, almost modern lines make it a favorite photo stop and a striking contrast to the dense ornamentation of Karnak.
Two enormous seated statues of Amenhotep III, each about 18 meters tall, stand alone in an open field on the West Bank — nearly all that remains of what was once the largest mortuary temple in Egypt. In antiquity, one statue was famous for emitting a strange sound at dawn, which the Greeks attributed to the mythical hero Memnon; the 'singing' stopped after Roman-era repairs. Because they sit right beside the road, the Colossi make for a quick, striking photo stop on the way to other West Bank sites.
