Still lying in the granite quarry where it was carved almost 3,500 years ago, this obelisk cracked before it could be finished and freed from the bedrock. Had it been completed, it would have stood taller than any other obelisk raised in ancient Egypt. Walking around and even inside the quarry trench gives visitors a rare, tangible sense of the tools and techniques ancient workers used to cut and move stone on this scale.

Wear comfortable, modest clothing suitable for sightseeing and comfortable walking shoes. A hat, sunglasses and sun protection are recommended. A light layer can be useful for early-morning departures, air-conditioned transport or cooler evenings.
