The road trip to Abu Simbel takes roughly three hours each way through desert scenery along Lake Nasser, arriving at the twin rock-cut temples built by Ramesses II. Four colossal seated statues of the pharaoh guard the entrance, and the temple's interior is aligned so that, on two specific days each year, sunlight reaches all the way to the innermost sanctuary. Most coach trips leave before dawn to allow a full morning at the site and the return drive the same day.
